Zirconia restorations typically have a low rate of chipping, with one retrospective study finding a chipping rate of 0% for single-piece zirconia crowns over a one-year period, compared to a chipping rate of 7.61% for metal-ceramic restorations.
Zirconia is a strong and durable material that can withstand the forces of biting and chewing. However, zirconia restorations, especially veneered zirconia restorations may suffer from porcelain chipping. And there are three main reasons that trigger the occurrence of porcelain chipping:
1. Poor design of the bottom crown form, local surface decorative porcelain is too thick;
2. Failure to control the temperature according to the standard when sintering the decorated porcelain, such as rapid cooling;
3. Doctors do not carry out reasonable treatment after jaw adjustment, such as re-glazing sintering, or standard three-step polishing.
